During emergency situations most of the available information is restricted to a closed public safety system that feeds information directly to first responders when an emergency is reported. This often slows down response time and creates inefficiency in collecting proper data of emergency and security situations across Nigeria.
The Yawa App is a GIS based early warning system on the users’ cell phone designed to serve as an SOS signal for persons in distress to enable first responders/emergency workers pinpoint with accuracy the location of the distress calls on the GPS map to facilitate effective, efficient, and economical responses and prevent further harm by narrowing time gaps in providing lifesaving assistance.
Yawa is for everyone — and is therefore completely independent. With Yawa, everyone in the community, whether a resident or member of law enforcement, has the same access to the app and its unbiased information.

Once you have downloaded the application, the next step is to register using your phone number. An OTP will be sent to you for verification purposes. After which you will be required to input three emergency contacts.
Once you are registered you will get alerts of emergencies happening around your location or that of your loved ones registered as emergency contacts.
Most such devices are sold with several apps bundled as pre-installed software,
